I have just spent the day at an awesome event presented by Mike Dooley of ‘The Secret’ fame. It was part of his World Tour III – Playing the Matrix and Getting What You (Really) Want. It took place in Manchester in the UK but the tour continues into 2011. If it comes to a city near you, I highly recommend going along.

The matrix by Mike Dooley is an elegantly simple chart illustrating his model of the true nature of reality and the flow of creation. It totally resonated with me and gave me a whole new perspective on setting and achieving goals.

Everything is based on the belief that THOUGHTS BECOME THINGS. If you do not believe that what is in your life has been created by the way you have thought in the past, then this is not for you. If you do accept that you do manifest your reality and want to be able to do it consciously, that is what the Matrix is all about.

I have always had great difficulty with traditional goal setting methods. Life is divided into five or sometimes seven areas. You are supposed to set goals in each area for one year, three years, five years, ten years etc. Most of these goals seem to revolve around stuff and the point of setting the goals is to get you excited.

I sit down to write them and I feel depressed. I need to make a list of about 42 things and then read the list several times a day. Well, 42 things is just too many to think about and I don’t even want most of them anyway. But you have to do this process or something terrible will happen.

Then there is the question of do you keep focusing on these things or do you visualize and emotionalize them and then let them go. There seems to be some disagreement among the self help gurus. The matrix takes care of all this.

You get to decide what you REALLY want, which is not actually the stuff and you can express it in a few short phrases. These are the big picture end results that you are looking for. They are general enough that you can last a lifetime without having to change them. These are what you are attached to.

Then you can get down to some of the details like the house or the car or the zero gravity chair (that’s one of mine). These, you get pictures of and stick them on your fridge. Visualize them as if you already own them. Feel what it is like to use them and get excited. This is where you put the emotion in.

But this is not what you are attached to. You have left it open to the Universe to provide something so much bigger and better that you couldn’t even imagine it. And when all this is in place, you take action. It doesn’t have to be a perfect action.

In mike’s words, ‘Do whatever you can, with whatever you’ve got, from wherever you are. It may not seem to leading towards your dream, but just choose the least worst option and get started. Do all the nonspiritual, boring basic stuff.

Your job is just to pitch the balls. You never know which one the Universe is going to knock out of the park. But you’ve got to be in the game. The more things you do, the more opportunities there are for one of them to lead somewhere.

The trick is to not be attached to the details. The path that leads to your big, general goal might be an entirely unexpected one, but who cares. If you got the first part right, you are getting what you really wanted, not just the shiny stuff.

I probably haven’t put this across very well at all. You needed to be there. It is a day that is intriguing, inspiring and insightful. It is laced with humour and mike’s famous ‘Notes from the Universe’.

It is not one of these Tony Robbins style events where you come away totally pumped, but it just wears off after a few days. I left with a quiet certainty that I know what I am doing now. I know how to work with the flow of the Universe to get what I REALLY want.

Rhonda Byrne and the producers of The Secret did a good job in bringing the law of attraction to a wider audience but they only scratched the surface. Mike Dooley gives you the tools to put it into practice. The best part is that it doesn’t seem like a chore. It can be fun and you don’t need to obsess about it.

Check out TUT’s Adventurers Club and see if the world tour is coming your way. If you want to know how to be happy, stress free and fulfilled, you really should go.

In the last few days, I suddenly seem to be receiving multiple opportunities to review personal development material, which is great because that is what I love. Since the objective of this site is to inform you about these things, here goes.

I have just read one book called Outrageous Mastery. I had not heard of it before although it has been around since 2006 and is apparently very successful. It has been read in over 90 countries and gets some rave reviews.

This is not really going to be one of them. It does have something going for it but I also have issues with it. It tells the personal story of a woman who is now known as Sasha Xarrian. (That is explained in the book).

It is both the story of her own personal triumph over many adversities and a sort of fantasy tale, designed to put across her message that we all have access to powers that are beyond our own human limitations.

The these two elements are intertwined through the 140 pages of the book. Her goal is to teach us all to use these powers in the way that she has learned to, in order to create the lives that we desire.

Her own story concerns being a member of the Mormon church and being brought up in absolute certainty of the rightness of her beliefs. Her whole life revolved around the church, her extended family and the community.

Circumstances led to her having to leave the church her husband and her support group and bring up 6 children alone. Having been secure in her position as wife and mother, she suddenly found herself needing to find a new home for her family and a way to feed them, having never had a job before.

The many challenges she faced over a period of years would have stopped most of us in our tracks. But she came through it all to create an enviable lifestyle. The other thread of the book is how she believes it was possible.

She has her own theory, which you are not really required to believe, about a sort of pre-life in preparation for this life. When we are born into this life, we loose access to great powers that we were aware of in this pre-life.

She becomes the subject of an experiment by a group of people in this other existence in which they try to communicate with her on earth and help her to learn about the powers that we can all access.

As I say, it is not necessary to believe this, only to admit the possibility that we can tap into sources of power that can help us to achieve whatever goals we set ourselves. This has nothing to do with any religious beliefs.

Sasha herself questioned whether the ‘miracles’ she experience whilst in the Mormon church were due to that. What if it were true that the Mormons were the chosen people and she had cut herself off from this power?

Through her own experimentation, she came to the conclusion that this was not the case. She went on to write a trilogy of books to help others to use her methods to create the life of their dreams.

She has developed a technique that she calls her ‘Moment of Outrageous Mastery’. This is a short ritual, which you can learn to use yourself, to prepare to face any challenge and overcome it.

This is where I have a problem with the book. I would love to able able to tell you something about this, but I can’t. The book is an interesting read and an inspiring story, but it is just preparing the ground.

If you want to learn the practical techniques of Outrageous Mastery, you have to buy the next two books. If there had been any clue as to what is involved, I might have been tempted. But personally, this book didn’t give me enough information to know if the purchase would be worthwhile.

As usual, her website has dozens of glowing testimonials for this process from people who have apparently found it useful. I would have preferred to have more in the first book to base my own judgment on.

Having said that, she is a good writer and has provided a useful free resource for helping to boost self confidence. You don’t just read it. It is workbook with practical exercises to carry out. I recommend doing them.

It is available as a straight download with no opt in or anything and it might be worth a few minutes of your time. It ends with an exercise that few of us do but we could all benefit from.

When Bob Proctors ’11 Forgotten Laws’ was released a while ago, I bought it and put a comprehensive review of it on this site. I have since removed it from public view. The reason is that I am becoming increasingly cynical about some of these self help ‘gurus’.

I have stated elsewhere on this site that I am a self confessed personal development junky. I constantly look for knew sources of inspiration and motivation. The problem is that few of these people have anything new to say. Soon after this product was released, there were two more big launches in this genre.

They were gatherings of the so called masters of the law of attraction. And there were all the usual suspects, including Bob Proctor, rehashing the same old platitudes. I am sorry, but when these launches happen only a couple of weeks apart, it is not because some new, revolutionary insights have come to light.

It is all about another opportunity for them to recycle their old stuff, for an extra boost to their bank balances. To be fair though, I suppose one way to create something from nothing is to ‘re-purpose’ your existing content. Well, I have read it once and if I want to, I can go back and read it again. I don’t need to buy it again!

OK, I am starting to sound like a bitter and twisted old man now, but there are few of these people that I still have any respect for. I like to take responsibility for my own life, so it is up to me to exercise my judgment when looking at these products.

There you go. I did learn something from them after all.

Can technology help the process?

We are often told to regularly visualize the goals we are trying to achieve. But that can be easier said than done. I have a very clear and precise goal. I can tell you exactly what is is and in great detail. That is the problem. My preferred representational style is ‘auditory digital’. That is, I tend to think in words rather than pictures.

What that means is that I would have no problem explaining to you, or to myself, in words, what my goal is. It is a different matter when I try to picture what it might look like, let alone to hold that picture in mind for any length of time. It is not that I have an unrealistic impression of visualization. Many people say that they can’t visualize, meaning that they can’t produce a stunning, high definition, 3d image.

Visualization experiment

For just about everyone, visualization is not like that. Try this. Imagine walking up to your front door and going in. What type of door is it and what colour. As you stand at the door, what sounds can you hear? Now, where is your key? Is it in your pocket or a purse? Which side of the door is the lock? Does the door make a noise as it opens? What is the first thing you see inside?

I bet that even as you read that, you had a fleeting impression of what entering your home looks like. Well, for most of us, that is as good as visualization gets. But that doesn’t change the fact that, visual is not my style and I find it difficult to maintain even that image for any length of time. You may have read in my other posts that I use a technological solution to meditation. So what about technological visualization?

Visualization technology?

I just found out about something called Mind Movies. They are a way that you can put together images, affirmations in text form and music, as a short video that you can watch on a daily basis and be inspired. A bit like a vision board, but with moving pictures and music to get you pumped up. The idea is that you don’t have to imagine it, you can just watch it. It is claimed by many people to be effective but I’m not sure.

I suppose anything can only be effective if you use it. Normal visualization takes patience and practice. Admit it. How many of you have tried it for two days and given up when it didn’t work? I know I have. If this only takes 3 minutes, while you are sitting in front of your computer anyway, there has to be a chance that you will keep it up. Can’t be that hard to give it a fair trial and see what it does for you.

I have grabbed some pre made videos that they are giving away. I’ll try them on the basis that every little helps, and it can’t do any harm. I really hate the soundtrack for the money one though. I wonder if it still works with the sound muted. I’ll let you know. Or you can get you own down below.

Mind Movies

11 Forgotten Laws – Law of Attraction

The movie ‘The Secret’ did a great job of bringing the Law of attraction to public notice, but it only gave us short sound bites on the subject and didn’t mention any of the other laws. So what do The 11 Forgotten laws and the book, Working with the Law have to add to our knowledge?

Desire and Expectation

This chapter begins by talking about two phases of implementing the Law of Attraction. The first is desire. Having to decided what it is that you want, you have to generate some emotion around it. You can’t just think that it would be quite nice to have a new car. If you are not excited about it, why should the Universe be? You have to desire it and keep your attention on it.

The second phase is expectation. It is not like buying a lottery ticket and seeing if anything happens. You have to absolutely know that what you desire is on its way to you. This is where we can fall down. If the thing desired is ‘Big’, by our estimation, it can be hard for us to maintain this air of expectancy. We can undermine our efforts with our own limited thinking. Many people have been conditioned to expect to make progress by small steps, if at all. To imagine a quantum leap takes some growth.

But where is the action?

Bob Proctor does say, “I have little confidence in the Lord answering the one who rocks in an easy chair and waits for the desired good to be placed on their lap”, but that is as far as it goes. The book, Working With The Law, is much more forthcoming about taking action towards your goal. Having fixed your attention on your burning desire, you should take whatever action you can to achieve it.

This doesn’t mean having a perfect plan, it just means doing whatever you can, now. Once you have decided on the goal, take some action immediately. If you pay attention, the next step will be made known to you. The author even goes as far as to say that there will still be obstacles in your path, but they will only strengthen your resolve. Discouragement from others will push us to greater effort.

Practical magic

This makes much more sense to me. I am much more comfortable with the idea that the Lord, or the Law, helps those who help themselves. I don’t think I could raise any genuine expectation of the good to come, while just sitting in my armchair. The Secret made it seem that things would come to you as if by magic and these two presenters do little to dispel that.

In this case, the audio track has little to offer. I would recommend giving it a miss and reading this chapter of the book instead. It is far more logical, detailed and more likely to bring results. It is well worth a proper study.

After the hype

I originally added this post when I first heard about this program and there were a series of free ‘presell’ videos available. See Below.

I have just found out about the release of series of videos by some of the masters of personal development and motivation. Several of them took part in The Secret, including Bob Proctor. Also taking part is Mary Morrisey, Bobs partner in the 11 Forgotten Laws which I have been reviewing.

Obviously, these videos are part of the presell process for another new program. I know nothing about the program but I do know that the free videos they are providing are well worth taking a look at. If you have read anything on this site, you will be aware that I am always looking for more motivation, an extra edge or the one thing that might get this message to click.

You can bet that I have signed up for access and will be watching with interest. As I have said, I have no idea what the ‘product’ is, but the free content is well worth taking a look at. If you are interested, you should take a look here.

The hype of the launch is over. The original blockbuster product sold out. The link now points to a sales page for a ‘lite’ version of the program which is less than half the price of the original. For a lite version it is still a hefty amount of content. I must say that after my initial reservations about the sales tactics, I am quite tempted. Now that all the fuss has died down, it might worth taking a look.
